About

Updated September 12, 2026

Content Aware Scale is an independent project maintained by flreey. It is built for a small, practical job: adapting a photo to another shape without installing a desktop editor or sending the photo to a processing server.

What you can use today

The image resizer adapts photos to common social and publishing formats. You can choose a target size, mark regions to protect or remove, compare the result, and export an image. The separate video generator deliberately exaggerates seam carving to make a melting or squishing animation.

All four tools process your selected image on your device. The site still uses network connections to load its code, fonts and analytics. Local image processing does not mean the whole website is offline; our privacy policy explains that distinction.

The SVG converter traces raster artwork into vector paths using VTracer. Retro Effects applies dithering and duotone with Photon. These tools run locally and do not use AI models.

How the resizing works

The resizer and video generator use a Rust and WebAssembly implementation of seam carving based on the open-source caire project. The algorithm looks for paths of lower visual change rather than understanding the meaning of every object. It can reshape a quiet background, but it can also bend lines or distort a subject.

For large ratio changes, the image resizer can crop part of the source before carving to limit distortion. It reports that adjustment with the result. See examples and limitations before relying on a resize for a finished design.

How these pages are maintained

Our guides explain the controls, describe suitable use cases and point out limitations. Examples are illustrations, not a promise that every photograph will behave the same way. Page dates indicate when that page was revised; they do not mean every browser or device has been tested on that date.

Content Aware Scale is not affiliated with Adobe or the social platforms named in its presets. Their names identify the tools and publishing formats that visitors ask about.

Cost and advertising

The currently available tools are free and do not require an account. Display advertising is not currently enabled. If it is introduced to support the site, advertisements will be distinguished from tool controls, and the privacy information and applicable consent choices will be updated before it is enabled.
